The Everyman Story

A brief summary of our story & why we had to start our podcast to help others who are struggling with their health.

We were born out of trauma...

Lewis was a young man known for being confident & happy-go-lucky. He seemed to have a bright future ahead, but beneath his "happy" exterior lay a growing darkness: gambling addiction. Despite his outward appearance of success and confidence, Lewis was entangled in a cycle that was slowly consuming his life.

His struggles began in his late teens. What started as casual bets and occasional trips to the casino soon escalated into a serious addiction by his late 20s. Lewis found himself increasingly drawn into the world of gambling, chasing losses and finding temporary solace in the thrill of the gamble. It was a relentless cycle that strained his relationships, damaged his finances, and left him feeling trapped and hopeless.

In the UK, gambling addiction affects thousands of people, with recent estimates suggesting that around 0.5% of adults are classified as problem gamblers. This addiction is often hidden behind a veneer of normalcy, as many suffer in silence due to the stigma and shame associated with their behaviour. Despite the presence of support services, reaching out for help can be incredibly difficult.

Lewis's was able to hide his addiction from those closest to him & that began to really eat him up inside. He became more secretive, missed important events, and his once-carefree demeanour was replaced by a constant undercurrent of stress. Friends & family tried to reach out, concerned about the changes they saw, but Lewis often brushed off their concerns or made excuses for his behaviour.

People close to Lewis were at a loss. They knew something was wrong, but the complexities of gambling addiction and their own uncertainty about how to help made the situation challenging. The stigma surrounding gambling problems meant they were hesitant to push too hard, fearing it might drive Lewis further away.

Lewis’s family, especially his mother, Kate, noticed his increasing withdrawal  but struggled to address the issue directly. Confronting the reality of gambling addiction was daunting, and Kate felt both helpless and unsure about how to support her son effectively.

One night, after a particularly devastating loss, Lewis found himself on the brink of despair. The financial strain and the emotional toll of his addiction made him contemplate ending his life. It was a moment of intense crisis, marked by overwhelming hopelessness. However, amidst the darkness, Lewis had a moment of clarity. He remembered the people who cared about him and the possibility of a different path. In that critical moment, he chose to reach out for help rather than succumb to his darkest thoughts.

Dean and Christian were relieved and supportive when Lewis finally opened up about his gambling addiction. Lewis found professional help and encouraged by his friends & families guidance it pushed him to engage with support services specialising in gambling problems. This support network became a crucial part of Lewis's recovery process, providing him with the tools and encouragement he needed to confront his addiction.

Realising the need to address his issues publicly and to help others in similar situations, Lewis decided to start the Everyman Podcast. The podcast was born out of his desire to create a space where he and others could discuss the realities of health, both mental & physical openly. Through candid conversations and shared experiences, Lewis aimed to break the stigma surrounding health issues and offer support and advice to those struggling.

The Everyman Podcast quickly gained traction, providing a platform for listeners to hear from those who had faced similar battles. Lewis used the podcast to highlight the importance of seeking help, sharing stories of recovery, and fostering a supportive community. His efforts resonated with many, contributing to a broader conversation about health and the need for effective support systems.

Lewis's journey was far from easy, marked by ongoing challenges and setbacks in his life. However, his decision to seek help and his commitment to raising awareness through the Everyman Podcast became symbols of hope and resilience. The weight of his struggles was still present, but with the support of his friends, family, and the podcast community, Lewis was working to create a brighter future for himself and others affected by health issues.
